Phone gallery filled with duck- face pouting selfies? If this sounds like you, Then High Five ! Same here . And I use filters too. Cannot even imagine clicking a picture without one.
Trying to look a shade brighter, removing those dark circles and stubborn acne marks, or adding a little glow to our face; we all have been there. And then we post those selfies on social media and WhatsApp status, smiling to glory seeing “Likes” and comments. Basically what we are actually searching for is validation. Just like how a drug addict needs his supply, we tend to get our supply in the form of approval from others.
But, is it possible to look drop dead gorgeous all the time? Atleast I cannot. So then, I straighten my hair, apply make up and only then do I click my selfie and that too with filters. Because like every other girl, I too want to look pretty all the time when I know in reality, I can’t.
Well, to be honest, Selfies aren’t all that wrong. I mean, it creates memories and is an effective way to communicate. I can choose how I want to look, so the idea of expressing oneself the way we want to look is empowering and let’s not deny, a good selfie does give confidence boost.
So are selfies a tool of empowerment or vanity? It depends. It’s a boon because it is a tool that enables self expression but a bane, if used exclusively for seeking validation.
We have created a false self or the ideal perfect illusion of us. It’s time to drop our masks and embrace ourselves. Our real self, not the perfect false self which we have created.

You are completely right that selfies can be good or bad depending on the motivation behind taking them. It reminds me of one of my favourite author quotes “We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We become what we pretend to be.” – Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind. Selfies should be an expression of ourselves and not a mask, pretending to be someone or something else. You can either never live up to what you pretend to be, creating a false self that you can never live up to and lose a sense of your own identity or selfie you becomes fake, empty and meaningless. Maybe that is a bit heavy lol.

Haha, Wudnt call it heavy stuff but it’s sure worth pondering. I, myself prefer taking selfies only with filters and make up On coz I want ppl to see the best version of me instead of the real me

One one hand, our selfies are supposed to give our friends on social networks a glimpse into our lives, and vice versa. However, these very selfies may give an idealized picture of us and of our social-network friends, which is misleading. The thing which is important to know is that the power of our words and the traits of our character should be valued rather than just our physical appearance. The expression of our face and our eyes conveys more about our nature and soul than our ‘perfect filtered look’. So, let’s enjoy our selfies and share them with our friends even though they sometimes don’t show our best moments.

Exactly. Do beautifully put Mira . Instead of trying to show how perfectly flawless we are, we need to just enjoy the memories. Thank you so much for sharing your feedback, Really appreciate the time and effort π

sometimes i do feel it as a vanity but again, it is a way of empowerment too. to be honest, self approval is the first thing we need to receive. if we don’t approve our own self, how can we expect to be the fighter? if one thinks, taking selfies and hiding flaws are her way of self motivation, it’s totally fine. but again, remember, we should always embrace our flaws. our flaws give us inner strength. never hate your flaws. stay happy and whatever that makes you happier. except that you should never forget the fine line between confidence and narcissism! take care… π

Thank you for your honest post! π
ItΒ΄s a very relevant topic.
I, personally, think itΒ΄s a little more problematic.
Espeacially concerning the youth.
Even though itΒ΄s a way to express oneself (in a superficial way),
I believe many are just craving for the validation you mentioned.
Keep up the good work!

The problem with selfies is once you get older, there are not enough filters in the world to like what you see. LOL

Nowadays people have become self obsessed and attention seekers. They just keep looking for validation of others and try weird things just to grab people’s attention.
